Game of the week
With the Winter Olympics on at the moment an obvious choice would have been Nagano Winter Olympics '98, but then I played it again and remembered that it was a pants game so I decided this weeks game of the week would be...... I played this game in the arcades a number of times, it had some really fun left and right throttle controllers which took a while to get used to but really added to the enjoyment of the game, the dreamcast version of the game was generally well received but the N64 version received very mixed reviews. So what's it like? Well as it is the game of the week it is pretty obvious that I personally like it, the graphics are fantastic and given the N64 limitations as arcade like as can be expected. The game is somewhat 'tongue in cheek' with battleships, pleasure cruisers and the like all able to match your speeds, you can also do outrageous jumps (press brake and boost together) and soar through erupting volcanoes One thing the game is not, is easy, especially on the later levels you really need to drive almost the perfect race in-order to qualify, personally I always take the first race to explore and find all the boosts and secret passages (of which there are many) and then re-run the race trying to qualify Interestingly this may be one of those games that is actually better emulated than it was on the real N64, a number of reviews complained about how the game ran slowly and had no sense of speed, on 1964 (or indeed PJ64) with the frame limiter off the game fairly zips along, another complaint was the sound, well for me to get the game to run I have to use the basic audio plugin which does not generate any sound, so no real complaints there either! Gamespot gave Hydro Thunder a rather harsh review of only 5.6 you can read the review here. Interestingly the user submitted reviews gave it a much more justified 8.3 As you can see from the screenshots below you have access to a number of fun boats and tracks, hmm Titanic, Artic Circle, dry land day me thinks! - olax
